In Wayanad about 300 are dead and around 300 people were still missing according to the local authorities. CM said that the final number can be ascertained only after the Revenue Department collects the details.
“Based on the information we have received, approximately 300 people are still missing. However, the Revenue Department is still collating the details. Within one or two days we will be able to get a final picture,” the local officials said.
The ADGP, who is in charge of Law and Order in the State, said the landslide-affected areas has been divided into six zones and separate search teams with cadaver dogs have initiated the search operations.
In some areas, the dogs are able to establish the presence of the dead bodies. The landslide on July 30 has completely washed away some villages leaving over 280 dead, while many are still missing.
Wayanad, known for its scenic beauty, has become a tourist hotspot leading to massive construction activities in the name of eco-tourism activities which often go unchecked. With mushrooming tourist resorts comes other infrastructure like connecting roads without assessing the
carrying capacity of the region.
