A total of 106 persons were sentenced to undergo imprisonment by the concerned courts for the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol in Cyberabad.
The imprisonment period ranges from 1 day to 17 days depending on the severity of the offence.
As driving under the influence of alcohol has been the major cause of road accidents, the CTP has been taking stringent measures as per law to curb this dangerous activity on roads.
Continuous checks for drunk driving, seizure of DLs, prosecution of offenders in the courts, suspension/cancellation of DLs by RTOs, are being implemented strictly.
As per Section 185 of the MV Act, driving under the influence of alcohol for the first time involves a penalty of Rs 10000 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months.
For subsequent offences, a penalty of Rs 15000 and/or imprisonment of up to 2 years.
Also, as per Section 206 (4), the Police Officers shall seize the original Driving License of such person and issue an acknowledgement to the person. However, such acknowledgement does not authorise the person to drive any vehicle.
The DL seized as above is forwarded to the Licensing Authority (RTO) for action as per Section 19 of the MV Act.
For the first time offence, the DL will be suspended for 3 months.
For the second or subsequent offence, the DL will be revoked.
The CTP has been implementing all the above provisions of the law in the true spirit of the law to improve road safety in Cyberabad.
Also, any person committing a fatal road accident in a drunken condition is being prosecuted for the “culpable homicide not amounting to murder” u/s 304 part II of the Indian Penal Code which envisages punishment of up to 10 years.
CTP urge the citizens to understand the severity of the complications involved in drunk driving and exhibit self-discipline for the safety of all road users.
