The state-owned transporter will present a proposal in this regard for the new President\u2019s approval in July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Past presidents \u2013 from Dr Rajendra Prasad to Dr Radhakrishnan and Dr Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy \u2013 travelled in twin carriages of ceremonial saloons built in 1956 on as many as 87 occasions since Independence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was the last to journey in the saloon in 2006. However, it was in the same year that the regal carriages \u2013 complete with a conference hall, lounge, study rooms and a cabin for the President\u2019s military secretary \u2013 were declared unsafe for train operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-94295 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/suresh-prabhu-in-mumbai_8e33e412-580b-11e7-b50f-ad66c5ec5579.jpg\" alt=\"8 crore BP -Train for new President\" width=\"737\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/suresh-prabhu-in-mumbai_8e33e412-580b-11e7-b50f-ad66c5ec5579.jpg 960w, https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/suresh-prabhu-in-mumbai_8e33e412-580b-11e7-b50f-ad66c5ec5579-500x280.jpg 500w, https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/suresh-prabhu-in-mumbai_8e33e412-580b-11e7-b50f-ad66c5ec5579-768x428.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 737px) 100vw, 737px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Railways \u2013 in its 2007-08 budget \u2013 sanctioned funds to the tune of Rs 6 crore for manufacturing a new presidential saloon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, President Pranab Mukherjee\u2019s secretariat cited security concerns \u2013 besides possible disruption of passenger traffic \u2013 to reject the plan in 2008.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf the new President desires, the Railways can build the new saloon soon,\u201d Arun Arora, chief mechanical engineer at Northern Railways, said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The country may be yet to decide on its next President, but the railway ministry is already planning a Rs 8-crore railway saloon for the winning candidate to move around in.
