Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special \u201cvalentine.\u201d The day of romance we call Valentine\u2019s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia.<\/p>\n

On the eve of his death Valentinus wrote a last note to Julia, urging her to stay close to God.\u00a0\u00a0 He signed it, “From your Valentine.”\u00a0 His sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D., near a gate that was later named Porta Valentini in his memory.\u00a0\u00a0 He was buried at what is now the Church of Praxedes in Rome.
