The online conversation &#8211; almost all of it about the sign&#8217;s inappropriateness &#8211; placed &#8220;Rape Melania&#8221; on a list of trending topics for some, but not all, Twitter users. Twitter customizes trending topics based on who users follow and where they are located.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33481\" src=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/meet-melania-trump.jpg\" alt=\"Rape -Melania is the trending topic\" width=\"373\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many Twitter users who saw that &#8220;Rape Melania&#8221; was trending criticized the technology giant for not removing it from lists of most-discussed subjects. Responding to a Washington Post inquiry, Twitter emphasized that the phrase trended because people denounced it, not because people advocated sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Something similar happened in March, when the hashtag #StopIslam trended after a terrorist attack in Belgium. The Washington Post&#8217;s Caitlin Dewey provided a helpful explanation at the time:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33482\" src=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ivanka-trump-sexy.jpg\" alt=\"Rape -Melania is the trending topic\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ivanka-trump-sexy.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ivanka-trump-sexy-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;As disturbing as this hashtag might appear, however, it&#8217;s actually quite the opposite. #StopIslam is only trending now because thousands of people are criticizing it. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The hashtag has been in circulation for at least five years, when it first entered the tea party-Twitter lexicon alongside bigoted mainstays such as #bansharia and #IslamIsTheProblem.
