They hit new lows in May when a U.S. drone killed the leader of the Afghan Taliban movement on Pakistani territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, Pakistan\u2019s ties with traditional rival India have also deteriorated this year, with India saying Pakistan-based militants killed 19 of its soldiers in a September attack on the Uri army base in the disputed Kashmir region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To many Pakistanis, Mr. Trump\u2019s anti-Muslim rhetoric \u2014 he once proposed banning Muslims entering the United States \u2014 and business ties with India are signs that his administration could shift further toward New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32309\" src=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/trump1.jpg\" alt=\"trump1\" width=\"959\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/trump1.jpg 959w, https:\/\/greattelangaana.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/trump1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 959px) 100vw, 959px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAmerica will not abandon Pakistan, but definitely, Trump will be a tougher President than Hillary Clinton for Pakistan,\u201d said Hasan Askari Rizvi, Lahore-based foreign policy analyst. \u201cI think India will have a better and smoother interaction compared to Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Trump has yet to lay out a detailed policy for South Asia, although he recently offered to mediate between India and Pakistan in their dispute over the divided territory of Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also told Fox News in May that he would favour keeping nearly 10,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan \u201cbecause it\u2019s adjacent and right next to Pakistan which has nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Wednesday, a U.S. diplomat in Pakistan sought to assure the country that Mr. Trump\u2019s election did not signal a drastic policy change.\u201cOur foreign policy is based on national interest and they don&#8217;t change when the government changes,\u201d Grace Shelton, U.S. Consul General in Karachi, told Geo News television.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pakistan PM Sharif has greeted Trump.\u201cYour election is indeed the triumph of the American people and their enduring faith in the ideals of democracy, freedom, human rights and free enterprise,\u201d Mr. Sharif said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump\u2019s surprise election as the 45th United States President has Pakistanis wary that he may accelerate what they see as a shift in American policy to favour arch-foe India in the long rivalry between nuclear-armed neighbours, analysts said on Wednesday.
